iTunes Top 25 Most Played

Okay, this is a call to all you improvisors and Blog readers. I am going to post the Top 25 most played songs on my iTunes and I challenge every one of you to do the same. First, a word of warning. This top 25 does not include playlists, so if you like making playlists (and who doesn't) it will be skewed. Also, try to be honest. I am tempted to delete a few choice selections and to add some (like the Pixies or Weezer...casualties of the playlist) but I will not. I will list the songs with a brief explanation for them. I expect everyone with an mp3 player capable of this feature to do the same. Show me your songs.

1. Boot Liqour Radio - streaming
www.bootliquor.com
Radio for Cowhands, Cowpokes and Cowtippers. Classic and alt country meshed together. You will NOT hear Toby Keith. You will hear Uncle Tupelo, Emmylou Harris and lots o' Johnny Cash.

2. Save Me - Aimee Mann
This is from the Magnolia soundrack. I listen to it when I'm sad. (pout)

3. How to Fight Lonliness - Wilco
My favorite song from one of my favorite bands.

4. Intergalactic - Beastie Boys
Every improvisor must have some Beasties on their list.

5. WBER - streaming
That's right, WBER...the official radio station of GCI is number five.

6. Wise Up - Aimee Mann
Okay, I just want everyone to know that I'm not stalking Aimee Mann.

7. Sorrow - Bad Religion
Just because three of the first seven songs are Save Me, How To Fight Lonliness and Sorrow doesn't mean that I am chemically imbalanced. I just like my songs sad, my whiskey warm and my women...my women...okay, so lets leave women out of this. How about "I like my songs sad, my whiskey warm and my cereal with milk."

8. Backslide - Rancid
Awesome band.

9. Beer - Reel Big Fish
Mmmm, Beer.

10. Summer Teeth - Wilco

11. Ashes of American Flags - Wilco

12. Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Mmmm, Geography.

13. Paul Revere - Beastie Boys
Mix the revolutionary war with hip hop and you have my attention.

14. Rich Girl - Daryl Hall & John Oates
I really wanted to leave this one off the list. Big Jim would be proud.

15. Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Me First And The Gimme Gimmes

16. Plateau - Nirvana
One year my brother got a stereo (with CD player!) for Christmas. Nirvana Unplugged and Weezer's Blue Album were in his stocking that year. We played the hell out of those two CDs.

17. The Wolf - Rancid

18. Roots Radicals - Rancid

19. Here Comes a Regular - The Replacements
Another song about drinking. I don't have a problem, but you do if you haven't listened to The Replacements.

20. Jesus, Etc. - Wilco

21. Supersonic - Bad Religion

22. You Don't Belong - Bad Religion
I won't get into the reason that there are three tracks from the 'Process of Belief' on my list. Lets just say that last weekend I put the album on repeat. For the whole weekend.

23. Brass Monkey - Beastie Boys

24. Somebody Got Murdered - The Clash
Frankly, I am surprised that The Clash are on this list. I have a whole playlist just for them, so they don't get counted. Henry Rollins once said that The Clash are the band that U2 wished they could be (this is called Tim Baiting). I don't know about that, but I listen to The Clash quite a lot.

25. Fortunate Son - Creedance Clearwater Revival
Creedance kicks ass and I listen to this song when I get to thinking about my friends stationed overseas. I hope that they return home safely.

I know what you are thinking. "Adam, there is no Metal, Jazz or Classical on that list. You are obviously a white male who likes a very limited range of musical styles." You are probably right, but tied with the bottom four on this list are selections from Outkast, Mozart and Miles Davis. If you count AC/DC as metal (either way they rock) they are tied as well. There it is. Let the posting begin.

  1. Yo Adam, the new version of Winamp also keeps track of this, so I will do that. I mostly listen to CD's and tapes (in my car, current favorites on tape are Lou Reed, Bodycount, Judas Priest and Grateful Dead Europe '72). So my MP3 list is really only representative of what I'm listening to while drinking and writing at the computer late at night, and don't feel like listening to any of my 200+ CD's, but here it is.

    1. Estradasphere - Buck Fever, the whole album. Heh heh, I love this album. Heavy Metal at the circus being played by Super Mario. This band is rare (the drummer works at Toys R' Us in Santa Cruz with ex-friend of Geva Comedy improv, JT Thibault, which is hilarious). You won't be able to find their CD's in stores, but can order them off the internet.

    2. Tenacious D - F--- Her Gently - I put this one on when people who don't know Kage and Jaybulls are over, to give them a good laugh.

    3. Grateful Dead - Shakedown Street. One of Jerry and the boys' funkiest efforts.

    4. Ben Folds - Rockin' the Suburbs. This one, well, it also cracks me up.

    5. Jurassic 5 - Verbal Gunfight. How much does Jurassic 5 kick ass? I don't know, but it's alot.

    6. Hypnotic Clambake - Ant Man. I LOVE this band, and this song. Even the ants need a superhero.

    7. Reef - Place your hands. This song was once on a mix for an IBTL, UR's improv group, show. It has often been regarded as the best improv mix ever, and this song is especially uplifting. The mix cd is gone, but the memories of the explosive show that it fueled are forever.

    8. Jay-Z - H to the Izzo. That's the anthem, get your damn hands up! This song was on the radio all the time the last summer I lived in St. Louis (2001), and it always reminds of the great times I had way back when with some great friends.

    9. The Toasters - Matt Davis: Secret Agent. If James Bond was named Matt Davis, this would be his anthem. You gotta wonder who Matt Davis was when you hear this one...

    10. Sublime - 5446/Ball and Chain - One of my favorite tracks off my favorite bands best album.

    11. Violent Femmes - Gimme the Car. This song is sexy sexy sexy. I wish I had actually borrowed my Dad's car in high school so I could relate better to it.

    12. Nine Inch Nails - Hurt. Has anyone heard Johnny Cash's version? I love this song, but it always makes me feel more sorry for myself than I do anyway.

    13. Tupac - Hit em Up. This song was a big contributer to people wanting to kill him. He demonstrates the emotion and rhyming in this song that make him the legend that he is.

    14. Sublime - Let's Go Get Stoned. Heh heh heh, I'm still not sure that this one isn't by Pink Floyd.

    15. Yonder Mountain String Band - Left Me in a Hole. Bluegrassy goodness with a heartwrenching story that reminds me why I'm single.

    16. Pink Floyd - Shine on you Crazy Diamond. Listen to those vocals... they can take to another place.

    17. Paul Simon - 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. Every song by Paul Simon is my favorite Paul Simon song, I guess this one just gets clicked a little bit more.

    18. Jimmy Eat World - The Middle. I'm embarassed to actually put this one on here, proof that I'm not filtering. Makes me feel like a teenager in love.

    19. Sublime - Greatest Hits. Can you tell by this point I'm a huge Sublime fan?

    20. Lovage - Stroker Ace. Anyone who has heard this album, has heard sex if it were translated into music.

    21. Rolling Stones - You can't always get what you want. Not my favorite stones song, but still pretty damned good. A lesson we all need to remind ourselves of on occasion.

    22. Jimi Hendrix - Bodycount does a sweet cover of this song. It's my favorite Jimi song, I think...

    23. Sublime - Boss DJ. This song is the reason I picked up a guitar and began the long arduous process of learning to play it, although this song is pretty easy.

    24. Warren G - Regulators. Nate Dogg is the man. A gangsta rap classic!

    25. Paul Simon - Me & Julio Down by the Schoolyard. Reminds me of high school when my friends and I would always meet in a grade school parking lot before going out to find trouble.

There must be 100 songs tying for last, but I still love lots of them.

  2. Here's what came up on my "favorites" list:

    1) Scissorfight, "Hex." Small indie band from New Enland that's so hard they'll make you poop your pants.
    2) Nine Inch Nails, "The Persistence of Loss." Bedtimey music.
    3) Pink Floyd, "When the Togers Broke Free." Totally sick.
    4) Dimitri from Paris, "Une Very Stylish Fille." Nice techno.
    5) Kid Koala, "Vacation Island." I could listen to this again and agina and again and again and again...
    6) Vince Dicola, "Death of Optimus Prime." Still brings a tear to the eye.
    7) Polyphonic Spree, "Soldier Girl (UK Remix)." One of the best live shows. Ever.
    8) Trans Am, "Lunar Drifter." Fulfilling that record store snob requirement.
    9) William Shatner, track 3...the "You're all gonna die" track. Kick ass.
    10) The Faint, "Dropkick the Punks." great middle eight: "what the fuck is this?"
    11) Superdrag, "Sucked Out."
    12) A Tribe Called Quest, "If the Papes Come." Tribe is my own personal anti-depressant.
    13) Fatlip, "What Up Fatlip." This is a GREAT SONG. I could listen to this over and over and over...
    14) Helmet, "Milquetoast." Haven't pooped your pants yet? As much as I hate to admit it, I keep listening to the best of (shunning the actual albums is something I hate doing) and thinking, "God Damn. I mean, GOD DAMN."
    15) Talking Heads, "Heaven." I would love to sing this to a crowd sometime. Bullwinkle's?
    16) Living Colour, "Memories Can't Wait." Cover of a Talking Heads tune.
    17) RJD2...the first track off his latest. It's da bormb, yo.
    18) Bad Plus, "Iron Man." Jazz tribute to the metal classic.
    19) Tomahawk, "101 North."
    20) The Dead Milkmen, "Bitchin' Camaro." Nothing needs to be said about this song, save for the fact that it is so good, nothing needs to be said about it.
    21) Whale, "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe." BER staple.
    22) J-Lo, "Jenny From the Block." Joanna looked up and asked, with a confused smile, "are you listening to Jennifer Lopez?"
    23) Genesis, "Land of Confusion." Seriously.
    24) Suicidal Tendencies, "I Saw Your Mommy..." Righteous. Metal up your ass, etc etc.
    25) Kinski, "Semaphore." I saw this band play this song at the Bug Jar and was hit by their wall of sound and thought, "I will someday make a movie and the only reason I will make the movie is so I can put this song, in it's entirety, in it, and make people all over the world think I'm cool for liking such good music."
